Are Sheepskin rugs hard to keep clean?

Many of us worry how to keep your sheepskin rug clean, here are som tips and tricks below to looking after your Sheepskin for years to come!

1. Shake and Brush the Rug

  • Shake: Take the rug outside and give it a good shake to remove loose dirt and debris.
  • Brush: Brush the rug with a sheepskin brush, this will keep your rug looking fluffy.

2. Spot Cleaning

  • For Small Stains:
    1. Blot the stain immediately with a clean, dry cloth to absorb moisture.
    2. Use lukewarm water mixed with a small amount of mild wool detergent or baby shampoo.
    3. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and gently blot the stain. Avoid rubbing, as this can tangle the fibers.
    4. Rinse the area with a cloth dampened in clean water to remove soap residue.
    5. Let the rug air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.

3. Hand Washing

If the rug is very dirty, you may need to wash it:

  1. Fill a bathtub or large basin with lukewarm water (not exceeding 100°F/38°C).
  2. Add a wool-safe detergent and mix.
  3. Submerge the rug and gently swish it around. Do not wring or scrub the rug.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water until no detergent remains.
  5. Press out excess water gently (do not twist or wring the rug).

If the rug is small enough to fit in the washing machine, you can also pop your washing machine on a cold hand wash cycle, adding a wool-safe detergent and the lowest spin that you can select.

4. Drying

  1. Lay the rug flat on a clean, dry towel to absorb water.
  2. Reshape it to its original dimensions while it’s still damp.
  3. Air dry flat, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, which can cause shrinkage or damage.
  4. Once dry, brush the wool gently with a pet brush or a wide-toothed comb to restore its fluffiness.

5. Professional Cleaning

For large, valuable, or heavily dyed sheepskin rugs, or if you're unsure about cleaning it yourself, consider taking the rug to a professional dry cleaner.

Tips to Maintain Your Rug

  • Rotate the rug regularly to ensure even wear.
  • Avoid placing it in high-traffic areas or under direct sunlight.
  • Spot clean spills immediately to prevent staining.
